About our beautiful neighborhood

History

The Wabeek Estate is land and the estate that once belonged to James S. Couzens who was the Mayor of Detroit between 1919 and 1922, and a United States Senator from 1922 until 1936. He used Wabeek as his summer residence until 1924, when he commissioned the great Albert Khan to design his new home. Khan designed a grand estate for James Couzens, and spared nothing on construction or details. It took several years to complete. Each fireplace has a different type of imported from all over the world, and intracate woodworking by the hand of master cabinetmakers from Germany and Switzerland. The decadent estate sits within the borders of Wabeek North.
